Novel Absorption-Type Bladder Irrigation Solution

Yang Wen-horng, National Cheng Kung University Hospital
Year 2018Year Period:2018-01-01 to 2020-04-30

Overview

  • Long-term use of urinary catheters tends to cause bacterial growth and in turn urinary tract infection. Worse complications include pyelonephritis and bacteremia that may even prove fatal.
  • Take advantage of activated carbon’s large surface area and extraordinary capacity for absorption to suck up bacterial endotoxins and slow down the pathogenicity of bacteria to the organism.
  • Mitigate the morbidity and mortality deriving from urinary tract infection caused by long-term use of urinary catheters, thereby reducing medical costs and the waste of hospitalization and other medical resources.

Development Process

Over the course of this project under the Applied Research Incubation Program, the team outsourced this novel absorption-type bladder irrigation solution to a PIC/S GMP-compliant manufacturing facility, secured sterility validation, conducted biocompatibility tests for ISO 10993 compliance, developed an infection detection kit, and confirmed a regulatory pathway. A human trial is now under way.
